Perhaps there has never been a greater time in our history to deliver on our promise. In response to the growing economic hardship felt by many of our fellow Hoosiers, St. Vincent Health is reaching out to those in need by establishing a new patient bill payment plan program. Under the new plan, a patient with an outstanding bill will now receive information about alternative payment options, and St. Vincent Health will work with the individual based on their annual income and existing balances. This plan will make it easier for patients to arrange interest-free payment options, without the fear of it affecting their credit. St. Vincent Health estimates that the new plan will benefit a high percentage of Indiana patients. St. Vincent Health understands that 14 percent of Indiana's population is currently uninsured and patients are forced to pay for health care costs out of their own pockets. That factor, coupled with the increasing number of individuals who are unemployed, means that many people are having more difficulty paying their medical bills. As a consequence, many individuals are forgoing preventive care, such as routine physician office visits as well as elective procedures, as a way to reduce expenses. St. Vincent Health found this practice often leads to unmanaged chronic disease and sometimes serious complications, resulting in extended hospital stays and over-utilization of emergency departments. St. Vincent Health will remain committed to appropriately caring for the uninsured population, but to also consider those who are "underinsured" and may have difficulty paying for their medical expenses.
